Land Commissioner candidate Hector Uribe pushes for straight-party vote

Lawyer, legislator, lobbyist … actor? Yes, our Democratic candidate for Texas Land Commissioner is something of a renaissance man who is fascinated by energy issues, fine Spanish wine and the possibility of turning out large numbers of first-time Hispanic voters in November.

A lawyer for 37 years, Uribe served the Brownsville area for nearly a decade in the Texas Senate and three years in the Texas House. He has been a legislative consultant for many years, too, representing subdivisions, trade associations and non-profits. He also manages a small family ranch, which he describes as “330 acres in the middle of nowhere,” in Zapata County. Originally posted on the Travis County Democratic Party website

On energy, Texas needs leadership

I don't know what's worse, the danger of Texas losing its worldwide leadership role in energy production, or the current state leadership seemingly being OK with that. Everybody knows that Texas has long been a worldwide energy leader. If our vast reserves of oil and gas hadn't sealed the deal, then our can-do spirit would have. Oil and gas production on state-owned lands has helped fund public education and keep taxes low. The economic activity generated by the energy sector has been key to fueling our economy.

An Open Letter

On May 5, we emailed supporters and those interested in the campaign for Land Commissioner a light-hearted "happy Cinco de Mayo" message. My email celebrated the sentiment behind the day, which in my view is a very Texan "against all odds, we can do it!" attitude.

Feliz Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Here in Texas, celebrating Cinco de Mayo has evolved to become a day in which we celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Hispanic Texans, and the origin of the day is deeply rooted in Texas history.

Thanks, Jerry

Too often, campaigns are about personalities and attacks, instead of ideas. But not ours.

Since Day One on the campaign trail, our campaign has shared with Texans my vision that the General Land Office could become a major catalyst in moving Texas into a 21st Century renewable energy economy, by aggressively promoting wind and solar energy. We don't have to choose between a clean environment and a healthy economy - we must do both.

Inspired

So often big changes come from seemingly small actions.

40 years ago, Earth Day was a small, community based idea. Four decades later, it serves as a reminder of how we can substantially improve our communities by making only modest changes in the way we live and work.
